Microsoft has announced a significant update to its Skype platform that will eliminate advertisements entirely. The move, designed to improve user experience, will see ads removed from all Skype channels and the main chat interface.
“Our latest update removes all ads from Skype channels and the entire Skype platform, ensuring a smoother, decluttered and more enjoyable user experience,” said Skype product manager Irene Namuganyi.
While the update promises an ad-free experience within the core Skype application, the ‘Today’ section, powered by MSN, will remain. Users who desire a completely ad-free environment can disable this feature within the app’s settings.
Beyond the ad removal, the update introduces enhanced AI image creation tools for Skype users on Windows and macOS. These tools will be more accessible within chat windows and offer improved functionality. Additionally, the user interface has been refined to better integrate with Apple‘s macOS design principles.

For iOS users, the update brings OneAuth integration, allowing for seamless sign-in to Skype using existing Microsoft credentials. Furthermore, a bug affecting photo and video sharing over 5G has been resolved.
The ad-free Skype update is scheduled for a broad rollout across all platforms in the near future.
While this development marks a positive step for Skype users, Microsoft continues to face criticism for its advertising practices on other platforms, including Windows.
