Microsoft has clarified that the recent appearance of a Recall uninstall option in Windows 11 is a glitch. The tech giant has been under scrutiny for its upcoming Recall AI feature, which has raised concerns about privacy and security.
Recall, designed to capture screenshots of nearly everything you do on your computer, was initially planned for release in June. However, due to security vulnerabilities and privacy concerns raised by researchers, Microsoft delayed its rollout. The company has since made significant changes to address these issues, including making Recall an opt-in feature, encrypting its database, and requiring Windows Hello authentication.
While the recent update seemed to suggest that users might have the option to uninstall Recall entirely, Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug. The company has stated that a fix for this issue will be released in an upcoming update.
The question of whether Microsoft will eventually allow users to fully uninstall Recall remains unanswered. While the appearance of the uninstall option in the Windows features list might suggest that this is a possibility, the company has only confirmed that it is a mistake.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft has faced pressure from the European Union to provide users with more control over their devices. The Digital Markets Act, a new set of regulations aimed at promoting competition and fairness in the digital market, requires tech giants to offer users the ability to uninstall pre-installed apps. If Microsoft were to allow users to uninstall Recall, it could be seen as a way to comply with these regulations.
For now, it appears that Microsoft is committed to addressing the privacy and security concerns surrounding Recall. Whether the company will ultimately grant users the option to remove the feature entirely remains to be seen.
