Microsoft‘s AI assistant Copilot has a new trick up its sleeve — songwriting. Thanks to a collaboration with Cambridge-based AI music startup Suno, Copilot users can now generate original songs complete with lyrics with just a text prompt.
This new integration allows Copilot users to tap into Suno’s AI music composition technology simply by enabling the Suno plug-in within Copilot. Once enabled, users just need to type a text prompt describing the kind of song they want Suno to generate — such as “folk song about summer love” or “pop punk song about cats.” Within seconds, Suno’s AI will get to work composing an original 1-2 minute song matching the prompt, lyrics included.
Copilot’s songwriting capabilities via Suno put it in competition with other tech giants exploring AI-generated music, like Meta’s AudioCraft and YouTube’s unnamed lyric and melody writing neural network. Smaller startups in the space like Soundful, Magenta, Beatbox, and more are also vying to become leaders in the red-hot AI music space.
The integration with Suno offers an exciting new avenue of experimentation for Copilot users, though aspiring AI songwriters should note Suno’s rules around commercial use of its free tier-generated songs. While users are free to share Suno-powered Copilot creations on social media, monetization on streaming platforms is forbidden. Upgrading to Suno’s paid tiers allows commercial usage of AI-generated tracks.
So for Copilot users looking to flex some creative songwriting muscle, Suno offers an intriguing new tool to explore. The next AI-powered pop hit might be just a text prompt away.
