Microsoft revealed its latest addition to Bing’s repertoire: AI-generated buying guides. This development aims to enhance the search engine’s functionality by providing users with comprehensive product comparisons within specific categories, such as headphones or laptops when searching for items like “college supplies.”
The buying guides, generated by artificial intelligence algorithms, are prominently featured at the top of Bing’s search results. Clicking on the guide presents users with a summarized overview of the desired product, accompanied by a list of relevant options. By selecting the Compare button, users can access a side-by-side chart that draws specifications directly from manufacturers’ websites. Microsoft emphasizes that these buying guides are accessible through Bing chat as well as in the Edge sidebar.
The product comparison chart offered by Bing could serve as a practical tool for assessing the relative merits of different items, provided the data it pulls in is accurate. This feature is currently available in the United States and will soon roll out worldwide in conjunction with Edge.
In addition to buying guides, Microsoft is introducing review summaries into its Bing chatbot. When inquiring about consumer opinions on a particular product, the chatbot will summarize reviews obtained from popular retailers such as Amazon and Walmart. Personally, I am intrigued by this feature and plan to test it by comparing the chatbot’s synthesized insights with genuine customer reviews, ultimately seeking to ascertain the details it highlights.
An example shared by Microsoft showcases Bing’s review summary for the “Surface Headphones 2.” According to Bing, these headphones are an ideal choice for travelers, students, and individuals in search of top-notch active noise cancellation (ANC) capabilities. Highlighted features include a sleek design, excellent sound quality, a lengthy battery life, support for hands-free Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as a clear microphone system for calls.
However, it is worth noting that the claim of a “long battery life” does not align with numerous customer reviews available on Amazon. Several reviewers, including one of the top-rated comments, mention not achieving the advertised 20 hours of battery life. Thus, it is prudent for users to conduct their own research and exercise caution when relying solely on the AI-generated summaries provided. The availability of review summaries will extend to users worldwide.
Furthermore, Microsoft is integrating a price match feature into Edge, its web browser. This function monitors the price of purchased items and, should the price drop, prompts users to contact the retailer for a refund. Remarkably, users need not craft the communication themselves; Bing will automatically draft a message that can be sent to the retailer.
While Microsoft’s efforts to infuse Edge with AI tools and shopping features are undoubtedly commendable, some users might find the browser becoming increasingly cumbersome. Initially touted as a nimble alternative to Chrome, Edge is now becoming bloated with tools that not all users desire or require. Although generative AI represents a groundbreaking advancement, consolidating these tools within an extension rather than integrating them into the browsing experience of all users may prove more beneficial.
