Threads, Meta’s newest social platform, seems to be gradually introducing a location tagging feature that lets users add their location to posts. While not available to everyone just yet, some users have spotted the feature in their Threads app.
If this sounds familiar, it’s because the setup is similar to Instagram’s location tagging. Once you give Threads access to your location, a list of nearby spots will pop up for you to choose from. You can also manually search for specific locations if you’d rather not use the automatic suggestions.
But there’s more to this than just fun tags. Meta has a bigger goal behind the location sharing feature. According to a note within the app, the company plans to use location data to deliver more personalized content based on where you are. For example, if you’re in New York, Threads might show you posts or events happening around the city. This could also help improve the app’s search functionality, which still leaves a lot to be desired.
What’s interesting is how this could play into the future of Threads as Meta gears up to monetize the platform. Though Mark Zuckerberg has mentioned that ads won’t be coming to Threads immediately, the addition of location sharing could give Meta an extra edge when they do. Knowing where users are would allow the platform to target ads more precisely, which could be a game-changer when Meta finally flips the switch on Threads’ ad system.
So far, Meta hasn’t provided a lot of details about the rollout, and not everyone can access the feature right now.
While it’s clear that Meta is still in the testing phase, the introduction of location tagging could signal a shift toward making Threads more relevant for users who rely on timely and localized content. It will be interesting to see how this feature evolves and whether it can help Threads compete with other platforms as a go-to source for news and events.
