So, here’s a bit of bad news for all you filter fanatics out there: Meta (the folks behind Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger) is pulling the plug on third-party face filters and AR effects. No more turning yourself into a cartoon character or aging up like a grandpa with those fun little filters.
Starting January 14th, 2025, Meta is shutting down the platform that creators use to make these filters. While Meta’s own filters will still be around, it’s a big blow to the creative community.
Why the change?
Well, Meta’s got big plans for AR (augmented reality). They’re working on those fancy glasses that’ll probably make you look like a cyborg, and they want to focus their resources on that. So, it seems like third-party filters are getting the axe.
What does this mean for us?
Fewer filters, that’s what. But don’t worry, any videos you’ve made with filters will still be there (read official instructions). And if you’ve created your own filters, you can download them before they disappear.
