Meta is betting big on personalization with a major expansion of its AI “memory” feature, aiming to make its chatbots feel more like helpful friends than robotic assistants. Starting this week, users in the U.S. and Canada will notice Meta AI across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp tailoring recommendations based on everything from their dietary preferences to their weekend plans—and even their late-night Reels binges.
How Meta’s AI memory works
In a Monday blog post, Meta announced it’s widely rolling out an upgraded memory capability for its AI chatbot, first tested in limited form last year. The AI now actively “remembers” details shared during one-on-one chats—like your love of hiking, aversion to dairy, or plans to visit Tokyo—and uses that data, alongside your Facebook and Instagram activity, to refine its suggestions.
For example:
- If you mention you’re vegan after the AI suggests a chicken recipe, future food ideas will skip meat.
- Ask for family-friendly activities, and it might recommend a local country music concert, pulling from your Facebook profile’s home address and your recent obsession with Luke Combs Reels.
Note that users cannot opt out of this data-driven personalization for now.
The fine print: privacy, control, and limits
While the feature aims to mimic human-like recall, it comes with guardrails:
- No group chat snooping: Memories are only formed in one-on-one chats.
- Manual deletion allowed: Users can review and delete specific memories or disable the feature entirely via settings.
- Data sources: The AI cross-references your age, gender, interests, and activity across Meta’s apps—a detail confirmed on Meta’s support page.
Still, the lack of an opt-out option raises eyebrows.
Competing in the AI memory race
Meta isn’t alone. ChatGPT and Google Gemini already let users save preferences for more personalized interactions. But Meta’s advantage lies in its treasure trove of social data—your likes, posts, and scrolling habits—which could make its recommendations eerily accurate.
