Meross, a popular name in the smart home space, has unveiled its first Matter-certified smart thermostat—and its first aimed at whole-home heating and cooling systems in North America. Priced at $99.99 (just $69.99 for early birds), the thermostat boasts features like Wi-Fi connectivity, a sleek white glass touch screen, and smart scheduling, all while tracking your HVAC system’s usage via the Meross app.

And here’s the real kicker: it integrates seamlessly with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings thanks to its Matter certification. This marks a significant step toward simplifying smart home setups, eliminating the need for cloud-based connections and proprietary apps.

What’s inside the box?

The Meross Matter Smart Thermostat keeps things simple yet functional. At its core, the thermostat requires a C-Wire for installation and is compatible with 95% of heating and cooling systems. If you’re worried about expanding its capabilities, Meross also offers Matter-compatible temperature and humidity sensors at $30 each. However, note that these require a Meross hub for operation.

The image shows a Meross Matter Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat (model MTS300) and its packaging. The thermostat has a sleek, modern design with a white, minimalist interface displaying the temperature as "72°F" along with icons for Wi-Fi connectivity and cooling mode. The packaging is white with blue accents, featuring the Meross logo and product name. The Matter logo is also visible, indicating compatibility with the Matter smart home standard.
The image shows the components of the Meross Matter Smart Thermostat. The items displayed include a Trim Plate (x1), a BackPlate (x1), a Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat (x1), a Wiring Sticker (x1), Screws and Anchors (x3), and a User Manual (x1). Each item is labeled with its name and quantity. The Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat is the central device, featuring a digital display with temperature and icons. The Trim Plate and BackPlate are mounting accessories, while the Wiring Sticker helps with installation. The Screws and Anchors are for securing the device, and the User Manual provides instructions.

The base plate has multiple labeled terminals for connecting wires, including Rc, Rh, O/B, W/AUX, W2, E, R, C, G, Y, and Y2. Several colored wires (orange, blue, green, white) are already connected to the terminals. A small level is integrated into the base plate to ensure proper alignment during installation.

With Matter certification, the thermostat’s strength lies in its versatility. You can set it up directly on your preferred smart home platform—skipping the Meross app entirely if you choose—and enjoy reliable, local control over your home’s heating and cooling.

The Matter advantage

Matter, the new smart home interoperability standard, aims to simplify connected devices’ functionality. Instead of relying on individual ecosystems or proprietary apps, Matter devices work on a unified protocol, making them compatible across major platforms.

For Meross’ thermostat, this means you can control it via Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant without worrying about compatibility hiccups. Matter also promises a more private and secure experience since devices can communicate locally over Wi-Fi without needing cloud servers.

The competition

While smart thermostats are nothing new, Meross is stepping into a field with surprisingly few Matter-compatible options for US HVAC systems. Currently, only Google’s Nest Thermostat ($129.99) and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) ($279.99) share this feature.

This lack of competition makes Meross’ $99.99 thermostat an enticing choice—especially since it’s currently launching at a discounted $69.99. That’s significantly cheaper than the alternatives, though you’ll miss out on some of the more advanced features that Nest devices offer, like automatic schedule adjustments and AI-driven energy savings.

Another unique advantage for Meross? Its thermostat supports Matter-compatible room sensors, providing a more granular approach to temperature control. Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat also offers room sensors, but they lack Matter compatibility, limiting their ecosystem flexibility.

The roadblock for Matter thermostats

If Matter is such a game-changer, why aren’t more thermostats hopping on board? One possible explanation lies in Matter’s current limitations. For instance, the protocol only recently started supporting advanced features like scheduling and preset modes (e.g., Home, Away, Vacation) in its 1.4 release.

This means companies like Ecobee, Honeywell, and Amazon might be holding off until Matter’s functionality aligns better with their existing smart thermostat ecosystems.

Should you buy it?

If you’re eager to dip your toes into the Matter ecosystem—or already have Matter-compatible gadgets in your home—the Meross Matter Smart Thermostat is worth considering. It’s affordable, simple to use, and fits snugly into the vision of a truly interoperable smart home.

However, if you’re after advanced automation, predictive scheduling, or AI-driven energy insights, you might find Google’s Nest lineup more appealing despite the higher price tag.

For many users, though, the Meross thermostat offers an easy entry point into the world of Matter. Its combination of price, compatibility, and functionality makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to upgrade their HVAC system without breaking the bank.

What is Matter, anyway?

In case you’re new to the term, Matter is the industry’s response to years of fragmented smart home ecosystems. Backed by giants like Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung, it’s an open-source standard that ensures smart home devices can communicate seamlessly—regardless of brand.

Matter works over Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and a low-power protocol called Thread, enabling everything from thermostats to light bulbs to robot vacuums to operate together without needing separate hubs or apps.

In practice, a Matter-certified device like the Meross thermostat can be controlled by multiple platforms simultaneously. So if your household is split between Google Home and Alexa users, everyone can interact with the same gadgets without switching platforms.

Final thoughts

The Meross Matter Smart Thermostat could be a game-changer for smart home enthusiasts looking for an affordable, flexible, and future-proof solution. While it doesn’t boast the AI sophistication of pricier competitors, it more than holds its own as a user-friendly, Matter-certified option for modern HVAC systems.

At just $69.99 for its launch price (normally $99.99), it’s a compelling reason to rethink your thermostat—and maybe even your entire smart home strategy.
