Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg became the latest internet meme this weekend after an awkward video of him at Saturday’s UFC 298 fight circulated widely online.
The 10-second clip shows a tracksuit-clad Zuckerberg nodding repeatedly and offering his hand to cornermen in the octagon before the main event fight. The cornermen ignore Zuckerberg as they focus on preparing the fighters.
The seemingly banal clip quickly went viral, resonating with many internet users who saw it as painfully relatable. Soon, memes comparing Zuckerberg to an over-eager coworker, houseguest, and finance bro flooded social media.
“Trying to be collaborative with the cashier while they ring up my groceries,” tweeted one user.
Zuckerberg, a known MMA fan, was in attendance to support featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski, who ended up losing his title to opponent Ilia Topuria in a close decision.
While he may have felt out of place, Zuckerberg did get some appreciation from the winning fighter. Topuria could be seen enthusiastically high-fiving the tech mogul after climbing atop the octagon cage in victory.
“I got too excited. I was looking at Mark Zuckerberg and I had too much fun,” Topuria later joked at a press conference.
This isn’t the first time Zuckerberg has been prime fodder for memes and mockery. Everything from his metaverse avatar to congressional testimony has spawned viral joke cycles.
But at least this latest meme pokes fun at something relatable rather than the Meta CEO himself. And if he can take a punch in the octagon, he can probably take one on the internet too.
