Remember that time you wished your super thin laptop had a keyboard that didn’t feel like mush? YouTuber Marcin Plaza feels your pain. In his latest video, he took matters into his own hands (and probably voided a warranty or two) by cramming a satisfying mechanical keyboard into his 13-inch Lenovo Yoga.
The struggle is real. Laptops with keyboards that actually feel good to type on are usually huge and clunky, while the thin and light ones come with keys that feel like typing on a pancake. Plaza wasn’t having it, especially after his stock keyboard crapped out on him… twice!
So, Plaza decided to ditch the whole keyboard and bottom part of his laptop, but don’t worry, he kept the good stuff: the screen, hinges, battery, trackpad – basically everything that makes a laptop a laptop. He then pulled an all-nighter (well, a 12-hour design marathon) to design a whole new case for his little Frankenstein creation.
This wasn’t your average DIY project. Plaza got some help from a sponsor to craft a custom case made of sturdy aluminum. The bottom? Fancy Plexiglass, because why not? This new case was thick enough to house the real star of the show: a low-profile mechanical keyboard with keys that actually move a whole 3.0mm (way better than the stock keyboard’s measly 1.8mm).
While Plaza’s creation is undeniably awesome, he admits it’s not exactly for everyone. You gotta be pretty handy (and maybe a little crazy) to pull something like this off. The project required some serious design skills and the ability to fix unexpected issues, like rewiring the keyboard. Plus, it looks like the laptop speakers got sacrificed in the process.
So, what can the average frustrated laptop typer do? Plaza’s project might not be a walk in the park, but it is a sign of hope! Maybe manufacturers will see this and start giving us keyboards that don’t feel like we’re typing on pillows. Until then, for those brave enough to grab a screwdriver and dream big, the possibilities are endless (or at least limited by your warranty).
