The new Logitech Powerplay 2 wireless charging mouse pad feels like a downgrade

Logitech is back with a new twist on their wireless charging mouse pad, and it’s stirring up some mixed feelings. The Powerplay 2, set to hit shelves on March 11, 2025, is a slimmer, supposedly spruced-up sequel to the original Powerplay that dropped back in 2017. At $99, it’s a cool $20 cheaper than the $119.99 launch price of its predecessor. Sounds like a win, right? Well, hold your mice—while it’s got some shiny upgrades, it’s also missing a few things that made the first one special. Let’s unpack this like a fresh gaming rig and see what’s really going on.

If you’re new to the Powerplay party, here’s the gist: it’s a mouse pad that doubles as a wireless charger for certain Logitech mice. You pop a little magnetic puck—called the Powercore module—into the bottom of a compatible mouse, set it on the pad, and boom, it charges while you play. No cables, no downtime, just pure, uninterrupted gaming bliss. The original launched with a bang, promising to banish dead batteries to the past, and it worked with heavy hitters like the G903 and G703. Over the years, Logitech expanded the lineup, and now over 10 mice—including fan favorites like the G502 Lightspeed and Pro X Superlight—play nice with it. Pretty slick, huh?

Back in 2017, Tom’s Guide called it “intriguing” and “suggestive of the future,” though they weren’t sold on it being a must-have for everyone. PCWorld went further, dubbing it “forward-thinking” and admitting it turned them into wireless believers.

What’s new with Powerplay 2?

So, what’s Logitech bringing to the table with this sequel? First off, it’s thinner—down to a sleek 3.5mm total (that’s base plus pad), compared to the original’s 4.2mm with the soft pad or 5.2mm with the hard one. The charging base itself is a mere 2.2mm, making it feel less like a clunky slab on your desk. They’ve also bumped up the charging area by 15%, which sounds great for keeping your mouse juiced no matter where it lands. And—finally—they’ve ditched the ancient micro-USB for a USB-C cable. Welcome to 2025, Logitech.

Size-wise, it’s a bit of a shuffle: the Powerplay 2 measures 344 x 284mm, tweaking the original’s 344 x 321mm footprint. It’s technically smaller overall, losing some depth, which might bug low-sensitivity players who need room to swing their mouse like a broadsword. Still, Logitech says it’s all about refining the experience—plug it in, slap on your mouse, and you’re good to go.

Oh, and it’s backward compatible with all those Powerplay-ready mice you might already own. No need to upgrade your rodent army just yet.

The catch: where’s the magic?

Here’s where the vibe shifts from “ooh, shiny” to “wait, what?” The original Powerplay wasn’t just a charger—it was a multitasker. It came with two swappable pads (one cloth, one hard) for different play styles, and the hub doubled as a Lightspeed wireless receiver, freeing up a USB port on your PC. That was a big deal—less cable clutter, seamless mouse connection, and a premium feel that justified the $120 price tag.

The Powerplay 2? It’s a bit of a downgrade dressed up as a deal. You only get one pad now—a soft one—and the hard option’s gone unless you buy it separately (if Logitech even offers it). Worse, the hub’s lost its receiver powers—it’s just a charger now, so you’ll need to plug your mouse’s dongle somewhere else. And that USB-C cable? It’s fixed, not detachable like the original’s micro-USB. For a desk accessory you’re not moving much, a detachable cable was a nice touch for cable management. Now, you’re stuck with a 6-foot rubber leash that might cramp your setup style.

How does it stack up?

Let’s put this in perspective. The original Powerplay launched at $119.99, and it’s not widely stocked anymore. At $99, the Powerplay 2 isn’t exactly a steal—it’s still a premium buy, especially when you consider what’s missing. Compare that to, say, a decent wireless mouse with a charging dock (like Corsair’s Dark Core RGB Pro) or even a standalone pad like Logitech’s G240 ($10) plus a Qi charger. The convenience of constant charging is sweet, but it’s a niche perk that’s tough to justify at this price when battery life on modern mice—like the G502 Lightspeed’s 60 hours—already lasts weeks.

And then there’s Razer’s Hyperflux experiment from 2018, a similar wireless charging pad that flopped hard and vanished fast. Logitech sticking with Powerplay is a win for fans of the concept, but this sequel doesn’t push the boundaries like the first one did. It’s playing it safe—too safe, maybe.

Who’s this for?

So, who’s picking up the Powerplay 2? If you’re already deep in Logitech’s ecosystem with a compatible mouse and you hate plugging in, it’s a solid grab—especially if you find the original’s bulk annoying. That $99 price might drop come Black Friday (fingers crossed for a bundle with the G309 mouse, Logitech’s cheapest Powerplay option at $80), making it more tempting.

Logitech’s Powerplay 2 is still a cool idea: a mouse pad that keeps your wireless mouse alive forever. It’s thinner, it’s got USB-C, and it’s $20 lighter on your wallet. But it’s also less feature-packed than the original, trading some of that “wow” factor for cost-cutting. If you’re all about simplicity and don’t mind the compromises, it’ll do the job when it lands on March 11th.
