As the clock ticks down to CES 2025 in Las Vegas, LG Electronics (LG) has just pulled back the curtain on a significant leap in automotive technology with its new Cross Domain Controller (xDC) platform, developed in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies. This announcement, made on the morning of January 3, 2025, highlights a push towards integrating advanced vehicle systems into a more cohesive, efficient unit.

The xDC platform is not just another gadget for cars; it’s a central hub designed to marry LG’s In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) System and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) under one roof, using Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon Ride Flex System-on-Chip (SoC). This SoC is already renowned for its versatility in automotive applications, supporting both automated driving and digital cockpit functionalities.

What’s under the hood?

  • Integrated system efficiency: The xDC aims to simplify the digital landscape inside vehicles. By using a single SoC to handle both IVI and ADAS, the platform promises smoother operations and reduced complexity in vehicle management. This is crucial as cars evolve into moving smart devices, where managing numerous separate systems can become cumbersome.
  • Enhanced driving assistance: One of the standout features is the “ADAS confidence view,” which blends 3D and 2D graphics to offer drivers real-time, intuitive alerts. Whether it’s warning about a car too close for comfort or alerting to an unintended lane drift, this feature is designed to make driving safer and more intuitive.
  • Customizable information display: Drivers and passengers can benefit from a main vehicle display that not only shows critical navigation information but also integrates real-time data like traffic updates or even localized promotional offers, turning the vehicle into a personalized hub of information.
  • Cost and efficiency: By consolidating systems, LG aims to cut down on costs associated with multiple ECUs (Electronic Control Units), offering a high-performance solution at a potentially lower cost.
  • Safety first: The platform has been engineered to meet the stringent ASIL-D safety standard, which is essential for systems that could impact vehicle safety, ensuring that the xDC is not just innovative but also secure.

LG and Qualcomm will put the xDC platform through its paces at CES 2025, where they plan to offer private demonstrations. These sessions will not only showcase the platform’s capabilities but also how it could redefine the standards of vehicle control systems, emphasizing efficiency, safety, and user experience in the era of software-defined vehicles.

Behind the collaboration

Eun Seok-hyun, President of LG Vehicle Solution Company, expressed his enthusiasm about the platform, stating, “The xDC platform, powered by the advanced Snapdragon Ride Flex SoC, provides automakers with a versatile solution that streamlines complex vehicle systems while elevating the driving experience. This collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies establishes a new standard for innovation in the automotive industry, shaping the future of mobility.”
