For those still easing into the new year, know that the biggest annual consumer electronics show, CES 2024, is fast approaching. Should you happen to find yourself wandering the crowded halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 9-12, we’d strongly encourage a visit to LG’s booth in Central Hall to glimpse one of the more eccentric – yet intriguing – offerings on display.
Making its debut is DukeBox, billed by LG Labs as “an innovative audio product that seamlessly combines the charm of vacuum tube audio with cutting-edge transparent OLED panel technology.” This novelty piece aims to fuse old-school vacuum tube amplifiers with LG’s state-of-the-art display tech, reinventing the classic jukebox experience for the modern age.
And it certainly is a sight to behold. Mounted behind the transparent OLED screen is a vista of vacuum tubes, glowing warmly like analog relics of the past. The display’s transparency can be adjusted to make it appear as if these tubes are enclosed in a glass case, or even nestled within a cozy fireplace, the audio components visible among flickering flames.
It’s an attempt to merge the ambient, retro-futuristic appeal of vacuum tube audio with LG’s prowess in advanced display engineering. And with front-facing speakers built into the base, plus a 360-degree speaker integrated into the top, LG promises DukeBox will provide an immersive and multidimensional listening experience.
Of course, this being an LG product, it’s not all about quaint ambiance and analog nostalgia. The display allows for enjoying high-quality video content as well. So DukeBox aims to be a feast for both the ears and the eyes.
As with most concept products revealed at CES, whether this novelty music box will ever actually come to market remains to be seen. But its playful attempt to blend old-world vacuum tube audio with transparent OLED displays makes DukeBox one of the more charming – and unusual – ideas we’ve encountered on the show floor thus far. It may be an indulgent flight of fancy, but LG deserves kudos for thinking outside the box with this one.
