After years of grayscale e-readers, Rakuten Kobo is finally embracing color with the launch of two new devices featuring E Ink’s latest Kaledio color screen technology. The Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Clara Colour promise to bring a new dimension to the digital reading experience, albeit with a few compromises.
The Kaledio displays on these e-readers boast subtle, pastel-like hues, a far cry from the vibrant colors we’re accustomed to on traditional screens. However, the tradeoff is a resolution drop from the standard 300 pixels per inch (ppi) grayscale to 150ppi when viewing content in color. It’s a sacrifice Kobo hopes readers will be willing to make for the added visual flair.
Kobo Libra Colour
Leading the charge is the $219.99 Kobo Libra Colour, the higher-end of the two new models. This 7-inch e-reader retains all the features of its grayscale sibling, the Kobo Libra 2, including a crisp 1680 x 1264 resolution display, adjustable warmth, and support for Kobo’s stylus input. Speaking of styluses, the Libra Colour is now compatible with the updated Kobo Stylus 2, though you’ll have to shell out an additional $69.99 to add that functionality.

Kobo Clara Colour
For those seeking a more compact and affordable option, Kobo has also unveiled the $149.99 Clara Colour. This 6-inch e-reader differentiates itself from the grayscale Kobo Clara 2E with 16GB of storage (double the latter’s capacity) and an improved processor for smoother performance. It also maintains the IPX8 waterproof rating, ensuring you can read worry-free at the beach or by the pool.

Kobo Clara BW
Not everyone is sold on the idea of color e-readers, however, and Kobo is catering to those traditionalists as well. The company has introduced an upgraded black-and-white model, the Kobo Clara BW, which matches the Clara Colour’s storage and processor upgrades for $129.99. All three new e-readers are available for pre-order, with shipments slated for April 30th.
