Instagram recently confirmed it is testing a repost feature that lets users reshare posts directly into their Feed, a shift from the current Story-sharing workaround. According to a report by TechCrunch, the social network acknowledged the experiment on Monday, and the feature has been in development for some time. The Verge corroborated this confirmation, quoting an Instagram spokesperson who declined to share detailed rollout plans but affirmed the testing of the repost button.
Signs of Instagram’s interest in a repost-like mechanism date back to 2022, when developers and researchers first spotted references to reshare functionality in the app’s code and support documentation. Early evidence suggested that Meta was weighing whether to bring a “retweet” style capability to a platform already rich with content formats. Now, some users are seeing the feature surface in their accounts, indicating Instagram’s confidence to trial it with select audiences.
While details are still limited, reports from those with access describe a familiar flow: tapping a “repost” icon beneath a post allows users to share it in their own Feed, optionally adding commentary or context. Notably, testers have observed the ability to repost their own past content as well as others’ posts, offering a way to resurface older material or amplify trending posts within one’s follower base. This diverges from the existing Story-share option by placing reshared content alongside original posts rather than in ephemeral Stories.
