The image shows the logo of "Edits by Instagram," a video editing app for creators. The logo consists of a stylized "E" and "I" formed by two curved lines and a vertical bar in the center. The curved lines are gradient-colored, transitioning from purple to pink to orange, while the vertical bar is white. The background is black, making the colorful logo stand out prominently.

Hey there, video wizards! If you’ve been feeling the pinch since CapCut took a hike with TikTok, there’s some good news on the horizon. Instagram‘s head honcho, Adam Mosseri, has just dropped the bomb about a brand-new video editing app called “Edits.” And yes, you guessed it, it’s here to take the crown from CapCut.

Mosseri shared the news in a video posted straight to Instagram, saying, “There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.” He’s not just blowing smoke; this app sounds like it’s packing some serious punch. Here’s what we know so far:

  • A creative hub: Edits isn’t just another editing tool; it’s described as a “full suite of creative tools.” It’s got everything from an inspiration tab to keep your creative juices flowing, to a spot for stashing your early ideas.
  • High-quality camera: The app features a camera that promises to capture videos in higher resolution than your typical smartphone fare, which Mosseri himself used to record the announcement video.
  • Editing galore: Expect all the bells and whistles you’d want in a video editor – think precision editing, green screen capabilities, and video overlays. These are key tools if you’re into that TikTok-style content creation.
  • Insights for creators: One of the coolest features? A live insights dashboard where you can see how your videos perform, not just on Edits but on Instagram too. This includes detailed breakdowns of engagement from followers versus non-followers and how viewers engage with your content.
  • A promotional screenshot of a new video editing app called "Edits by Instagram." The interface shows a video editing screen with various tools at the bottom, including audio, text, voiceover, captions, overlay, stickers, and sound. The video being edited features two people dancing. The timeline shows different segments labeled "Dance break," "Voiceover," and "Flux Vox Maxwell 126bpm." At the top, there are options to export the video, and the video resolution is indicated as 2K. The current time on the screen is 5:26, and the project is titled "Sunday vibes."
  • The image shows a screenshot of a video editing interface on a smartphone, likely from the Edits by Instagram app. The interface includes various icons and options for editing video footage. On the left side, there are icons for adding music and other effects. At the bottom, there is a large red record button, options for switching between SDR and HDR modes, and a setting for recording in 2K resolution at 60 frames per second. The text at the bottom of the image reads "Capture high-quality footage."
  • A screenshot from a video editing app called Edits by Instagram, showing a grid of project thumbnails. Each thumbnail has a title, the number of days since it was created, and its file size. The projects include "Free throw," "Inflata-BOOM!," "Sunny side up," "Stealth mode," "Nacho business," "Spa night," "Touch grass," "Hype squad," and "Wig was snatched." The bottom of the screen displays the text "All your projects in one place."
  • A screenshot from the Edits by Instagram video editing app, displaying the final screen before sharing a video. The screen shows the message "Ready to share. This video has been saved to your projects and camera roll." Below the message, there is a video thumbnail featuring two people posing energetically in front of a corrugated metal wall. The word "Besties!!" is overlaid on the video thumbnail in bold yellow text. At the top of the screen, a message reads "Export with no watermark." At the bottom, there is a button labeled "Share to Instagram."
  • Screenshot of Instagram Insights showing account performance metrics for the past 7 days. Highlights include 117,806 Reels views, a reach of 83,293, and a net follower gain of +38. A bar graph displays daily views, peaking midweek. Below, individual Reels are listed with views and engagement metrics. Examples include 'Sparky gets the zoomies and destroys the gate' with 12.3K views, and 'Long distance goat petting' with 20.3K views. Caption at the bottom reads: 'Understand your audience.'

Why now?

The timing couldn’t be more strategic. With TikTok and CapCut facing the music in the U.S., Instagram is making a bold move to capture the hearts (and screens) of content creators. While Mosseri didn’t explicitly say this is a counter-move, the dots aren’t hard to connect.

Edits seem tailored for those who’ve felt lost without their favorite editing tools from ByteDance’s now-banned apps. It’s like Instagram saying, “We’ve got you covered.” They’ve been working on this for months, fine-tuning it to be not just a replacement but something that could potentially outshine CapCut with a “much broader range of creative tools,” according to Mosseri.

What’s next?

You can already pre-order Edits on the iOS App Store, with the official launch slated for March 13th, 2025. If you’re an Android user, don’t fret; while no exact date was given, Mosseri assured us it’s “coming soon.”

So, whether you’re a seasoned video editor or just love playing around with your phone’s camera, Edits might just be the app that reignites your creativity. It’s shaping up to be a game-changer in the social media landscape, especially in these uncertain times for other video platforms.

Stay tuned, keep your editing skills sharp, and get ready to explore what Edits has to offer. This could be the beginning of a new chapter in mobile video creation!
