There’s no question about it: foldable phones are having a moment, but they come with one heck of a price tag. Google’s new Pixel 9 Pro Fold, priced at $1,799, is an eye-catching piece of tech. However, as any foldable owner knows, maintaining that futuristic display can make your wallet groan. Thanks to the recent iFixit listing for Pixel 9 Pro Fold repair parts, we now know that if you shatter the inner screen, a replacement will cost a whopping $1,199. This price doesn’t even include the repair tools, which bump it up to around $1,207 for a complete kit.

For perspective, that $1,199 price tag is the same as a brand-new iPhone 16 Pro Max and even pricier than the latest MacBook Air, which starts at $1,099. Essentially, replacing a foldable screen could cost you as much as a new phone or laptop. And while last year’s Pixel Fold inner screen replacement was already a stretch at $899, this 33% price increase for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is raising some eyebrows. Sure, foldables bring benefits like a tablet-size screen in your pocket and impressive multitasking, but keeping that screen in pristine condition is more financially daunting than ever.

Aside from the eye-watering cost of an inner screen replacement, iFixit has listed other Pixel 9 Pro Fold parts, like the outer screen ($190), rear cameras ($250), inner front camera ($90), outer front camera ($80), and both the base and flip batteries ($67). These prices suggest that high repair costs aren’t limited to foldable displays but extend to other components as well, underscoring a broader challenge with foldable devices: the price of convenience and novelty.

Meanwhile, Apple remains cautious about foldable tech, seemingly unwilling to jump into the foldable market until it’s perfected. While Samsung, Google, and others rush ahead, Apple has stayed silent on foldable iPhones or iPads—though many expect Apple’s foldables to debut around 2026–2028. When Apple eventually enters the foldable scene, the design and longevity will be under intense scrutiny, and so will repair costs. It’s no secret that Apple has a reputation for pricey repairs, but Google’s $1,199 replacement screen could set a new standard for sticker shock in mobile repair.

For now, if you’re tempted to jump on the foldable trend, just remember to add “screen replacement” to your mental list of potential costs. When that price is comparable to a high-end laptop, it’s fair to wonder: is the future of foldable tech worth it?
