After years of rumors and leaks, Rockstar Games has finally given fans an official first look at the next installment in the blockbuster Grand Theft Auto series. On Monday, the studio dropped a trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI / GTA 6), confirming it will take players back to the series’ iconic Vice City setting.
The 90-second trailer offers a slick and stylish introduction to this new chapter, immediately establishing the excess and danger that has defined GTA’s satirical takes on American culture. Opening on a female protagonist named Lucia locked up behind bars, she coyly tells the viewer she’s in prison due to “bad luck” before we get quick cuts of high-performance cars, swaggering gunmen, massive yachts, and the neon-bathed skyline of Vice City.
This new location, clearly modeled off Miami and the South Beach scene, looks to be just as much a chaotic, seductive character as the protagonists themselves. The sun-soaked shots show citizens living it up with abandon. Lavish parties overflow with glittering champagne towers while tourists flock to the beaches and high-rollers gamble the nights away in posh hotels.
Yet underneath the glitz, there are signs all is not well in paradise. The divides between fabulous wealth and desperate poverty become apparent as we see encampments under highways contrasted with dazzling penthouses. Lucia and her partner appear to slip outside the law to survive, joining underground street races one moment and angrily confronting rivals with guns drawn the next.
The trailer accelerates into a heartbeat-quickening crescendo of smash cuts showing high-speed chases, alligator attacks, and massive explosions as Lucia and her crew take big risks in pursuit of even bigger scores. After years of rumors, leaks, and feverish anticipation from fans, GTA VI looks poised to deliver the signature over-the-top action sandbox gameplay that has made the series both hugely successful and controversial.
While many details remain undisclosed, the closing shot confirms Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch in 2025, meaning fans likely have plenty more trailers and reveals in store during the next two years leading up to release day. If this first look is any indication, that launch is gearing up to be one of gaming’s most seismic events in recent memory. The King of Liberty City is returning recharged to reclaim its crown, and it looks like players will be happily getting into trouble all over again when they finally get let loose in Vice City.
