Forget the frustration of having a catchy tune stuck in your head with no lyrics to identify it. YouTube Music for Android is rolling out a new feature called “Hum to Search” that uses the power of artificial intelligence to recognize and identify songs based on your humming, singing, or even whistling!

This exciting update is a game-changer for those moments when a melody pops into your head, but the title and artist remain frustratingly elusive. No longer will you need to search the internet with vague descriptions or rely on unreliable lyric fragments.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the YouTube Music app on your Android device.
  • Look for the magnifying glass icon in the top right corner, which is your gateway to search.
  • Next to the familiar microphone icon used for voice search, you’ll see a brand new waveform icon. This is your key to “Hum to Search.”
  • A vibrant search page will appear, prompting you to “Play, sing, or hum a song.” Here’s your chance to unleash your inner musician (or lack thereof) and recreate that melody!
  • The good news is that this AI-powered feature seems impressively fast. Once you’ve finished humming, singing, or whistling, YouTube Music will analyze the audio and display a full-screen results page.
  • This results page is packed with information, including the song’s cover art, title, artist, album, and even the year it was released. You’ll also see handy shortcuts to play the song or save it to your library for later listening.

It’s important to note that this feature is currently rolling out as a server-side update, which means it might not be available to everyone immediately. The update applies to version 7.02 of the YouTube Music app for Android, and there’s no word yet on when iOS users can expect to enjoy this functionality.

While this might seem like a brand new feature, it’s actually based on technology that Google has been developing for a while. The “Hum to Search” capability was first introduced in 2020 for Google Search itself and later integrated into the main YouTube app last year.

This update brings YouTube Music in line with its counterparts, offering a more intuitive and user-friendly way to search for songs that are on the tip of your tongue. So, the next time a melody gets stuck in your head, fire up YouTube Music and unleash your inner humming detective!
