Google is set to introduce a new layer of parental control over children’s digital habits. The company announced plans to expand its “School time” feature to select Android phones, tablets, and Samsung Galaxy Watches over the next year. Initially launched on the Fitbit Ace LTE smartwatch, the feature allows parents to restrict app access, calls, and messages during designated school hours.
The move aims to create a more conducive learning environment by minimizing distractions. By extending School time to a wider range of devices, Google hopes to address the increasing prevalence of smartphone use among students.
Parents can manage these settings through the Google Family Link app, while older teens can utilize their device’s Focus mode for personalized control over notifications. In addition, Google will soon allow parents to link their YouTube accounts to their teens’ for added oversight.
While the expansion of School time is a positive step, several questions remain. Notably, Google has yet to specify which Android devices will be compatible with the feature. Furthermore, it remains to be seen whether Apple will follow suit with a similar expansion of its Schooltime feature for its smartwatch lineup.
