Google and Samsung have decided to collaborate to simplify the file sharing process on Android devices. During an event held at CES 2024, the companies announced that the Android Nearby Share feature will now be renamed as “Quick Share,” which is the same name used by Samsung’s file sharing service.
By combining efforts under the Quick Share branding, Android and Samsung users will now have access to a unified file sharing protocol that works seamlessly across devices. Quick Share will maintain the same functionality as Nearby Share, allowing easy wireless transfers between Android devices in close proximity. However, it will now gain some additional capabilities previously only available with Samsung’s proprietary version — such as sharing files and links with multiple contacts at once.
In addition to the Samsung partnership, Google is also working closely with LG to integrate Quick Share into future Windows laptops and PCs for even more expanded file transfer abilities. The goal is to reduce friction when moving images, videos, and documents between the multitude of screens and gadgets that make up the modern technology ecosystem.
This is just one of several announcements from Google aimed at improving connectivity and interoperability between devices. New LG televisions with built-in Chromecast capabilities were unveiled, allowing them to serve as smart home hubs for Matter devices. Pixel phones will also gain the ability to quickly transfer podcasts and music to a connected Pixel Tablet with a simple tap gesture thanks to new spatial awareness features.
And in a sign of even closer collaboration between the two mobile giants, Samsung teased integrations with Google’s artificial intelligence technology in their upcoming Galaxy phone unveiling next week. While the details remain unclear, improved partnerships between the two companies could help Android present a more unified front against their main competitor, Apple.
“Expect more of that to come,” said Erik Kay, Google’s VP of engineering. It seems that when it comes to software and services, Google and Samsung recognize that they are stronger together. This newfound spirit of cooperation can only mean good things for the future of the Android ecosystem.
