Google has begun rolling out an extensive December feature drop update for its fledgling Pixel smartwatch series, breathing new life into the Wear OS-powered timepieces. The update brings a bevy of new capabilities and customization options that aim to elevate the Pixel Watch from a promising but imperfect first attempt, into a truly must-have smart accessory for Android users.
Headlining the December drop is the long-awaited addition of “Do Not Disturb” and “Bedtime Modes” — two key features that help prevent unnecessary disturbances without missing anything important. Users can now mirror their preferred settings from their Pixel smartphone directly onto their Pixel Watch with just a few taps, allowing for seamless management of notifications.
The update also introduces new Pixel Watch faces featuring colorful “jellyfish” and “flowercase” designs, along with added complications that enable users to better customize the look and information available at a glance. These options not only make the Pixel Watch more fashionable but also more functional.
Under the hood, Google has addressed early performance issues that impacted some users. The update resolves sporadic image retention problems on the Pixel Watch 2’s always-on display. It also packs the latest December security patch with vital improvements to keep user data safe. LTE variants also gain connectivity and stability enhancements.
Other major additions in the feature drop include the Call Screen functionality for screening calls and auto-replies, as well as a useful “Unlock with Watch” feature that lets users bypass their smartphone lock screen when their Pixel Watch is nearby. However, call screening is currently only available in the US.
With the latest update, Google has shown its commitment to actively develop and support the Pixel Watch as a core part of its integrated hardware ecosystem. Based on the breadth of improvements included, it’s clear the company is determined to refine and perfect the formula with the benefit of real-world testing and customer feedback.
For Pixel Watch owners, the December drop represents a major step toward fulfilling the smartwatch’s immense but untapped potential. And with Google already eying future updates that could bring additional “fan-favorite” capabilities like Google Assistant support, the Pixel Watch journey may have only just begun.
