The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the successor to the Pixel Fold, is rumored to launch on August 13th at the Made by Google event. Google might be releasing a brand new multitasking update just in time, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold looks set to be the perfect device to take advantage of it.
Android‘s split-screen mode, a feature allowing users to view two apps side-by-side, has been around for a while, but it hasn’t exactly been praised for its functionality. Thankfully, improvements are on the horizon according to Mishaal Rahman, a journalist specializing in Android at Android Authority. These upgrades include a long-awaited split-screen mode specifically designed for foldable phones in portrait orientation.
Currently, split-screen on Android in portrait mode forces apps into a top-down configuration, which isn’t ideal. Code discovered in the Android 14 QPR2 beta back in March hinted that Google might be revamping this by allowing a left-right split for “portrait foldables.” While Google hasn’t mentioned specific devices, it’s clear this change is likely targeted towards the Pixel Fold series, particularly the upcoming Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Samsung‘s Galaxy Z Fold series already offers a left-right split-screen mode in portrait orientation, so this update wouldn’t significantly impact the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold6.
There’s a possibility that the stock Android split-screen mode might be limited to a few pre-defined app combinations. This means features like pop-up views and other multitasking options offered by Samsung foldables might not be available just yet. However, any improvement to the current system is certainly welcome.
The code discovered by Rahman also included a screen resolution of 2076 x 2152, which could potentially be the resolution of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s main screen. This resolution is slightly shorter but wider than the original Pixel Fold, suggesting a potential design shift for the new generation.
As Rahman points out, Google has been actively improving split-screen mode on Android in recent months. Android 15 allows users to save split-screen app combinations directly to their home screen, while a new desktop mode offers a more streamlined way to manage separate app windows. Hopefully, some of these features will make their way to the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as well.
We’ll know for sure when Google officially announces the phone, likely on August 13th at the Made by Google event. Stay tuned for more updates!
