Pixel fans have been inundated with leaks and rumors about Google‘s next affordable flagship, the Pixel 8a. As the anticipated May 14 launch date approaches, a new report from Android Headlines seems to corroborate many of the previous speculations while adding a fresh twist to the color palette.
If the leaks prove accurate, the Pixel 8a will be a powerhouse in its own right. Driven by the Tensor G3 chipset, the device is expected to pack a 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display, protected by Gorilla Glass 3. However, the real stars of the show might be the promised 120Hz refresh rate and an impressive 2,000 nits of peak brightness – notable upgrades from its predecessor.
One of the biggest pain points for smartphone users is battery life, and Google seems to have taken note. The Pixel 8a is rumored to feature a 4,492mAh battery, a significant boost from the 4,385mAh unit in the Pixel 7a. But it’s not just about raw capacity; the leaks suggest that Google will market the 8a as offering up to 24 hours of endurance or a staggering 72 hours with the Extreme Battery Saver mode enabled. Qi wireless charging will also be part of the package.
According to leaks, Google is taking its commitment to the Pixel 8a seriously, promising to provide the device with extended security support, OS upgrades, and feature drops for seven years. This is a significant improvement over the usual software support offered by most companies, which often feels like an afterthought. With this move, Google is setting a new standard for long-term software support in the industry.
While the camera hardware is expected to remain unchanged from the Pixel 7a – a 64MP primary sensor with OIS, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 13MP selfie shooter – Google is said to be packing in some new software tricks. The Pixel 8a is rumored to feature Magic Editor, Best Take, and Ultra HDR capabilities, in addition to the already impressive Night Sight, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Portrait Light, Portrait Mode, and Audio Magic Eraser.
Perhaps the most intriguing tidbit from the latest leak is the introduction of a new color option: Aloe. Previously rumored to be called Mint, this fresh shade will join the familiar Obsidian, Porcelain, and Bay hues. As for storage, the Pixel 8a is expected to come in 128GB and 256GB variants, priced at $499 and $559, respectively.
