If you’ve ever regretted backing up your entire photo library to Google Photos—whether by mistake or due to an accidental backup of a family member’s camera roll—you’re in luck. Google has rolled out a new feature called “Undo device backup” that allows you to reverse the backup process. The best part? It won’t delete your photos and videos from your device, but it will remove them from the cloud and stop them from backing up automatically in the future.
This new feature is currently available for iOS users and is expected to be released on Android soon. Here’s how you can use it:
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap your Profile picture (or initials) at the top right.
- Select Google Photos settings, then tap Backup.
- Scroll down to find the Undo backup for this device option.
- A prompt will ask you to confirm that you understand photos and videos will be removed from Google Photos (but not your device). Check the box to confirm.
- Tap Delete Google Photos backup.
Once this is done, your photos and videos will remain on your device, but they will no longer be backed up to Google Photos. Additionally, the backup feature will be automatically turned off for that device, so you won’t accidentally back up other items in the future.
This move adds a layer of flexibility for users who want more control over their cloud storage without losing their photos. Whether you’re trying to free up space or simply avoid backing up certain photos, this update gives you the freedom to make those changes easily.
