Heads up, Galaxy texters in the US! Samsung is ditching its own messaging app in favor of Google Messages on your shiny new phones.
Yep, those days of having two texting options on your Galaxy phone are over. Starting with the latest Galaxy Z Flip6 and Z Fold6, Google Messages will be the default app, meaning it’ll be the first one you see when you want to fire off a text. This news came courtesy of tech insider Max Weinbach, who spotted an announcement from Samsung.
Samsung’s all praises for Google Messages, saying it offers “a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun.” Sounds good, right? But there’s a tiny snag. If you are a big fan of Samsung Messages, you can still download it from the Galaxy Store. However, Samsung warns that some features won’t be available – they’re keeping quiet on exactly which ones, though.
For now, this switch seems to be just for US users. Tech expert Mishaal Rahman noticed that Samsung Messages is still the default on Galaxy phones in Canada and Europe. So, it’s unclear if this is a trial run for a worldwide change or just something for the US market.
This news is interesting because there were recent rumors that Samsung messaging apps, including its own Messages app, might be getting satellite features. There was even talk that Samsung phones could use Google Messages for sending texts via satellite, maybe even letting Samsung Messages users switch over to Google Messages for emergency satellite texts.
So, what’s the real deal? It seems like Samsung and Google are doing their own little messaging app tango. While Samsung is stepping back from its own app in the US, the possible satellite hookup with Google Messages suggests there might be some teamwork going on behind the scenes.
We’ll have to wait and see if this is a short-term thing or the start of the end for Samsung Messages.
