Google inadvertently unveiled its upcoming Android redesign, Material 3 Expressive, through a now-deleted blog post. This revelation, first spotted by 9to5Google, offers a glimpse into what the tech giant describes as its “most-researched” interface update to date.
Material 3 Expressive represents a significant evolution in Android’s design philosophy. Developed over 46 rounds of research involving more than 18,000 participants, the new design language emphasizes enhanced usability and visual appeal through strategic use of color, shape, size, and motion.
Key findings from Google’s research indicate that users could locate essential interface elements up to four times faster compared to the existing Material 3 design. Notably, the redesign also bridges usability gaps across age groups, enabling users over 45 to perform tasks as efficiently as younger users.

What’s new in the interface?
Material 3 Expressive introduces several noteworthy changes aimed at improving user interaction:
- Enhanced Floating Action Buttons (FABs): A new medium-sized FAB (80dp) complements the existing small, standard, and large options, providing developers with more flexibility in design.
- Optimized FAB menus: Smooth animations and contextual tools make it easier for users to access additional functions without cluttering the interface.
- Split buttons: These allow multiple related actions to be accessed from a single button, streamlining user interactions.
- Dynamic color features: Material 3 Expressive supports content-based dynamic color changes, enhancing personalization and engagement.
- Improved motion and animations: The design incorporates more natural and expressive motion patterns, contributing to a more intuitive user experience.
While the accidental leak has generated buzz, Google is expected to officially unveil Material 3 Expressive during a dedicated session at Google I/O later this month. The annual developer conference, scheduled for May 20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, will feature keynotes and sessions focusing on AI, Android, Web, and Cloud technologies.
In addition to Material 3 Expressive, attendees can anticipate announcements related to Android 16, codenamed “Baklava,” enhancements for foldables and tablets, updates to Android XR, and previews of Wear OS 6.
