Many of us are familiar with the tech industry’s tactic: offer a free service initially, then nudge users towards paid subscriptions. But a group of loyal Google Workspace users, clinging to their free accounts for over a decade, have just secured a rare victory. Not only did they manage to keep their free accounts, but some are even getting a bonus – extra storage, completely free!
Back in 2020, when Google rebranded G Suite as Workspace, they announced that everyone would need to switch to new paid plans. These plans offered a shared storage pool instead of individual allotments. This move didn’t sit well with users who’d been enjoying free individual storage for years. They pushed back, and Google, in a surprising move, allowed them to keep their free accounts – for personal use only, of course.
Now, there’s more good news for these legacy users. Until June 2022, they could pay extra for additional storage on top of their free base. But recently, these users received emails from Google informing them that their storage subscriptions were being canceled. While they were refunded their last payment, the real kicker came at the end: their storage limit would remain unchanged, and no action was required on their part.
This perk extends beyond just legacy accounts. Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson confirmed that users who migrated to Workspace but still had individual storage managed through Google Play would also benefit. Their individual storage wouldn’t be merged into the pooled Workspace storage.
If you’ve held onto your free G Suite account for over a decade, congratulations! You not only get to keep it for free, but some of you even get a free storage upgrade. There’s always a chance Google might change its policy in the future, but for now, this is a sweet deal for these long-time users.
