Google has introduced a new feature to its Chrome browser for Android that will change the way you consume content on the go. Forget juggling your phone and trying to speed-read an article while you’re on your commute or doing chores. Now, Chrome can read webpages out loud to you, right within the app, thanks to the new “Listen to this page” option.
Imagine this: you’re stuck in traffic and itching to catch up on the latest news. No problem! Just fire up Chrome, navigate to your favorite news site, and tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner. A new option, “Listen to this page,” should be nestled right below the familiar “Translate” function. With a simple tap, Chrome will transform itself into your own personal audiobook, reading the webpage aloud in a clear, synthesized voice.
Google hasn’t just thrown a text-to-speech feature at you and called it a day. They’ve included playback controls that rival your favorite music or podcast app. Need to pause for a second to answer a call? No sweat! Just tap the pause button on the handy audio player that pops up at the bottom of your screen. Want to rewind a bit because you missed something? A quick tap on the rewind button does the trick.
For those who like to customize their listening experience, Chrome offers a variety of options. Don’t like the robotic voice that’s reading to you? Change it up! Chrome offers a selection of different voices to choose from. Feeling a bit behind and want to catch up quickly? Adjust the playback speed to suit your needs. Chrome lets you speed up the narration by up to 4 times the original speed, or slow it down to 0.8 times the speed if you prefer a more leisurely listening experience.
And for those who are multilingual or enjoy consuming content in foreign languages, Chrome offers support for a variety of languages, including English, French, German, Arabic, Hindi, and Spanish, with more likely to be added in the future.
