For gamers passionate about classic titles, there’s good news from GOG (formerly Good Old Games): the recently launched GOG Preservation Program is a significant step forward in game preservation. It guarantees that games included in this initiative will remain playable even after being delisted from their store. This program represents GOG’s commitment to maintaining compatibility, providing ongoing tech support, and offering DRM-free access to classic games, even as publishers and technology move on.

One of the first high-profile examples of this program in action involves Warcraft I and Warcraft II. Blizzard Entertainment, the publisher of these iconic real-time strategy games, has decided to delist them from GOG on December 13, 2024, following the release of their remastered versions on Battle.net. Despite this, GOG promises that gamers who purchase the original versions through its platform will retain full compatibility and tech support. This includes adjustments for future Windows updates and improvements like enhanced graphics options and multiplayer support over LAN.

To make these games more accessible before delisting, GOG has introduced a discount code, MakeWarcraftLiveForever, which slightly reduces the bundle’s price—a testament to their playful yet serious approach to preserving gaming history.

The Preservation Program isn’t just a marketing gimmick; it’s a dedicated initiative to combat the fragility of digital game preservation. According to GOG, the program ensures:

  • Future-proofing: Games are tested and updated to run on modern systems, even as operating systems evolve.
  • Quality enhancements: Many titles are improved with added features like better graphics settings, bug fixes, and bonus content that is unavailable in other editions.
  • Offline access: DRM-free installers allow players to archive their games permanently, keeping them accessible even if platforms change or disappear.

The program initially launched with 100 games, including classics like Diablo, Resident Evil 1–3, and Heroes of Might and Magic III. The list is expected to grow as more publishers collaborate with GOG, ensuring their titles don’t vanish into obscurity.

Why this matters

In an age where digital products are increasingly tied to publisher servers and fleeting licenses, GOG’s program stands out. It gives gamers the assurance that the titles they love can be revisited years later, without compatibility issues or the fear of losing access entirely. For many, this initiative is not just about preserving games—it’s about preserving memories and culture.

If you’re someone who values the nostalgia and historical significance of classic games, GOG’s Preservation Program is a lifeline. By purchasing and supporting these initiatives, you’re contributing to a broader mission of keeping gaming history alive for future generations.
