Sony saved one of its biggest reveals for the end of its latest State of Play presentation, and it did not disappoint. Sucker Punch Productions, the team behind Ghost of Tsushima, finally gave us a sneak peek at their next big title, Ghost of Yotei. This time, we’re getting a new female protagonist, Atsu, who wields both a samurai sword and a shamisen—an unusual but intriguing weapon combo. If that wasn’t enough to grab your attention, she’ll be exploring the wilderness around the stunning Mount Yotei, accompanied by a mysterious wolf companion. Yep, you read that right—a wolf.
For those who remember the contemplative, cinematic beauty of Ghost of Tsushima, you’ll be pleased to know that Ghost of Yotei looks like it’ll continue that tradition while adding its own unique spin. The first game, released in 2020, blended breathtaking landscapes and the classic Akira Kurosawa-style samurai combat, earning heaps of praise and a loyal fanbase. Earlier this year, Sucker Punch also made waves by releasing Tsushima on PC and announcing a movie adaptation with none other than John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm. The hype around the franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
But what about Yotei? Well, here’s the exciting part: it’s the first game in the Ghosts series to be built specifically for the PS5. In a blog post, Sony shared that the developers have been able to take full advantage of the PS5’s hardware to create a world that’s even more alive and detailed than before.
“We have massive sightlines that let you look far across the environment, whole new skies featuring twinkling stars and auroras, even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation,” said Andrew Goldfarb, communications manager at Sucker Punch. “Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”
For anyone who’s played Tsushima, those “observation moments” where you just stop to admire the scenery were a big part of the experience. According to Sucker Punch, Yotei will offer more of that peaceful beauty, while also stepping things up in terms of action and gameplay variety. With the backdrop of Mount Yotei, a volcano in Hokkaido, it’s easy to imagine the game’s stunning vistas and dynamic weather conditions.
As for when we’ll get our hands on Ghost of Yotei, Sony’s staying pretty tight-lipped. They’ve given a vague release window of 2025, so we’ll have to be patient. But with everything we’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up to be worth the wait.
If you loved Ghost of Tsushima and the unique way it combined quiet moments with intense, cinematic action, then Ghost of Yotei is definitely something to keep an eye on. And who wouldn’t be excited to roam ancient Japan as a samurai, with a wolf by your side?
