Google‘s latest flagship, the Pixel 9 series, marks a significant advancement in smartphone emergency capabilities with the introduction of Satellite SOS. This innovative feature enables users to connect with emergency services via satellite, even in areas without cellular coverage.
The technology behind Satellite SOS is a collaborative effort between Google, Garmin, and Skylo. Garmin’s expertise in emergency management is instrumental in handling rescue operations for Pixel 9 users within the United States. When activated, the SOS function connects users to Garmin Response’s 24/7 emergency crew, which coordinates with local authorities to dispatch appropriate assistance.

Skylo’s global satellite network is the foundation for this service, providing the connectivity infrastructure necessary for satellite communication. By establishing a direct link between the Pixel 9 and satellites, Skylo ensures that help is accessible even in the most remote locations.

While the Pixel 9 series is the first Android device to offer Satellite SOS, the feature is currently limited to the United States (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). As the technology matures, it is anticipated that the service will expand to additional regions and devices.
