Ever found out your child spent a fortune on a virtual costume in Fortnite without your permission? Well, here’s some news that might ease your frustration. Starting this week, Fortnite players and their parents can seek refunds for unintended in-game purchases that hit them right in the wallet.
This chance for reimbursement comes after a hefty $245 million settlement was agreed upon earlier this year between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the creators of Fortnite, Epic Games. The FTC accused Epic Games of employing what they call “dark patterns” — tricky design tactics that lead players into spending real money on virtual items unwittingly.
So, what are the criteria for getting your cashback? You could be eligible if your child made purchases in Fortnite on your credit card without your knowledge between January 2017 and November 2018. Alternatively, if you were wrongly charged by Fortnite, or if your account was blocked after reporting unauthorized charges between January 2017 and September 2022, you could be in for a refund.
In addition to the refunds, Epic Games also faced the largest penalty ever imposed by the FTC — a hefty $275 million. Why? Gathering data on users under 13 without their parent’s consent is a severe violation of FTC rules. Notably, this hefty fine serves as a stark reminder to other gaming giants; Microsoft faced a similar but smaller penalty in June for comparable reasons.
So, if you were caught off guard by those sneaky Fortnite purchases, it might be time to keep an eye on your mailbox — a reimbursement check could be on its way soon.
