The Forbes editorial team, represented by the Forbes Union, staged a walkout on Tuesday, a strategic move timed to coincide with the release of the company’s high-profile “30 Under 30” lists. This annual tradition, which highlights young innovators and influencers across various industries, carries significant weight for the company, making it the perfect moment for the union to spotlight its ongoing contract dispute with Forbes management.

The union, which represents around 100 editorial staffers, has been pushing for better compensation and benefits since its formation in 2021. Their demands include a minimum salary of $75,000, 8% annual raises, and at least 15% raises for promotions. Additionally, they are asking for bonus pay for weekend and overtime work. On the other hand, Forbes management has proposed a wage floor of $60,000, with 1% annual raises and 5% increases for promotions, which the union argues are insufficient for the level of work expected from its members.

This walkout isn’t just about salary; the union is also protesting what it sees as anti-union tactics from management. There have been accusations of misclassifying staff members to reduce the union’s influence, a common practice during labor disputes. The union has been negotiating for a new contract for nearly three years, with no agreement in sight, despite ongoing talks.

Forbes management expressed disappointment over the walkout, especially given that a bargaining session was already scheduled. They also highlighted that salary increases have been implemented for many union members since 2021. However, the union feels that these increases don’t go far enough in addressing the growing cost of living and the demands of their roles.

By timing their walkout with the release of the “30 Under 30” lists, the union is hoping to draw attention not just to their pay dispute but also to the behind-the-scenes labor that makes these lists possible. As Andrea Murphy, Forbes Union’s unit chair, explained, the scale of work involved in curating these lists is enormous, and they want the spotlight to shine on their own contributions.
