Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of Twitter, has announced plans to convert one of the company’s San Francisco buildings into a homeless shelter. However, Musk claims that the building’s owners are preventing him from doing so.
“We tried to turn it into a homeless shelter. They won’t let us,” Musk told the BBC in a recent interview. “We’re only using one of the buildings so the other building could be a homeless shelter. We would like to do it right now… If the building owner lets us, we’ll do it.“
Twitter‘s San Francisco headquarters comprises two buildings, with one of them currently vacant. Musk has previously mentioned the possibility of converting the empty building into a homeless shelter in a poll he conducted on Twitter in April 2022, shortly after he became the company’s largest shareholder [that tweet has been deleted].
When asked about how the shelter would operate, Musk said, “I don’t know, we could just let people stay there. It’s nice… They could bring their stuff, bring their tent, whatever.”
However, the building’s owners have yet to respond to the proposal. Musk has recently been in a dispute with the owners after he tried to remove the “W” from the large logo outside the office, turning the company’s name into “Titter.” The building’s landlord has also sued Twitter for allegedly stopping paying rent.
Musk has made several changes to the building since becoming Twitter’s owner, including converting some of the office space into bedrooms that staff can book out. He has also tried to auction off furniture, sells office plants to staff, and cut back on snacks. Musk has been sleeping on a couch in the office’s library at times.
The billionaire entrepreneur, who has clashed with Californian authorities in the past, has moved his electric vehicle company, Tesla, to Texas. However, he stated that Twitter is “not yet” planning to leave San Francisco. “This place is nice,” he added.
