As tech enthusiasts descend upon Las Vegas for CES 2024, Dell has made waves by unveiling a refreshed lineup of its flagship XPS laptops. The company has decided to discontinue the 13-inch and 15-inch models and instead introduced a 14-inch and 16-inch size. Dell has taken a new approach and introduced what they call a “goldilocks” size that fits perfectly between the previous two models.
While the stalwart 13-inch XPS soldiers on with updated internals, the disappearance of last year’s unique XPS Plus and its touch bar seems indicative of a return to convention for Dell. Taking its place is the aptly named XPS 14 — the first mainstream 14-inch entry in the XPS family. Dell isn’t just getting bigger for bigger’s sake though. The extra real estate allows for a larger 69.5WHr battery, up from 55WHr in the outgoing 13-inch models. This should alleviate the nagging battery life complaints that plagued last year’s XPS Plus. There’s also more room for potent specs like an NVIDIA RTX 4050 GPU, Intel Core Ultra 7 165H chip, up to 64GB of RAM, and 4TB of speedy SSD storage. Of course, with great power comes…greater weight — the XPS 14 tips the scales at 3.8 lbs.
Topping off the revised lineup is the fresh-faced XPS 16, merging the role of both the aging 15-inch and 17-inch options. The idea seems to be striking a balance between the portability of the 15-inch chassis and the extra-screen real estate of the 17-inch. Specs match that ethos, slotting between the two predecessors with a 16-inch 4K OLED display, RTX 4070 graphics, and a 99.5WHr battery that splits the difference. Despite the bigger screen, Dell shaved off some weight – the XPS 16 still weighs less than the old 17-inch model.
Rounding things out is a novel Copilot key meant for easily accessing Windows 11’s AI-assisted productivity features. As artificial intelligence continues making inroads into the consumer space, this could be a glimpse of keyboard trends to come.

Of course, added performance and space don’t come cheap. The XPS 14 starts at $1,699, the XPS 16 at $1,899, and the XPS 13 still commands a premium at $1,299. Nevertheless, Dell seems poised to compete with Apple’s wildly popular 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. Shoppers eager to compare will get their chance when the new XPS laptops launch in the coming months.
