The highly anticipated trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios’ first R-rated cape film, debuted today promising a special reunion that will get fans hyped about Marvel movies again.

The trailer picks up with Wade Wilson/Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds reprising his role) and his partner Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) at an unspecified time following the events of Deadpool 2. Their domestic bliss is suddenly interrupted by the abrupt arrival of armored troops from the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a little-known Marvel comics organization tasked with monitoring timeline disturbances. While Wade breaks the fourth wall to crack wise about Disney’s 2019 acquisition of 20th Century Fox, TVA agent Mobius M. Mobius (Matthew Macfadyen) offers no explanation for why Deadpool specifically has been recruited.

It soon becomes clear that our wisecracking antihero is being tasked with some important timeline-hopping missions, as we next see him standing before a tattered 20th Century Fox logo on a battle-scarred landscape. This strongly implies that characters from Fox’s now-defunct X-Men films will be making appearances in this crossover spectacle. The trailer tantalizingly keeps Wolverine himself (Hugh Jackman, returning to the claws after 2017’s Logan) absent save for a blurry background shot, but the film’s July 26 release date can’t come soon enough for fans eager to see which mutants end up joining Deadpool’s time-traveling adventure.

Marvel Studios is betting big that Deadpool & Wolverine’s meta-comedic tone and promise of revisiting Fox fan favorites will reinvigorate audience enthusiasm after diminishing returns for 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
