Super Mario RPG, a beloved classic originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996, is getting a long-awaited remake for the Nintendo Switch. However, fans were disappointed to learn that the original director, Chihiro Fujioka, will not be involved in the project.
The news of Fujioka’s absence from the remake was revealed when a fan reached out to him on Twitter. In response, Fujioka confirmed, “I am not involved in the remake.” Despite this, he expressed surprise and pleasure upon hearing the news.
During the game’s initial development, Fujioka worked at Square, which is now known as Square Enix. The collaboration between Square Enix and Nintendo resulted in the creation of Super Mario RPG, with Nintendo handling the publishing duties. Given Fujioka’s history with the original game, fans were curious about Square Enix’s potential involvement in the remake. However, the game’s store page only lists Nintendo as the publisher, leaving Square Enix’s role unclear.

While Fujioka’s absence is undoubtedly disheartening for fans, there is some good news. Yoko Shimomura, the original composer for Super Mario RPG, will be returning for the remake. Shimomura expressed her enthusiasm on Twitter, stating, “I put all my heart into arranging all the songs, hoping that both the fans of the original and those playing for the first time can enjoy it!“
In a previous interview with MinnMax last February, Fujioka discussed his desire to create a sequel to Super Mario RPG. He expressed his interest in making another Mario RPG game where the player exclusively controls Mario, distinguishing it from the Mario & Luigi series. Fujioka’s passion for the Mario RPG universe was evident, as he revealed his hope for a Mario RPG to be his final project before retiring.
As anticipation for the remake continues to build, fans can expect the reimagined version of Super Mario RPG to hit the shelves on November 17th. While Fujioka’s absence may be disappointing to some, the return of Yoko Shimomura ensures that the game’s iconic music will resonate with both longtime fans and newcomers alike. As the release date approaches, gamers eagerly await the chance to embark on another adventure with Mario and his friends in this cherished RPG universe.
