Brazil’s Supreme Court has officially lifted the ban on X, Elon Musk’s rebranded Twitter, following the platform’s compliance with local demands. The decision comes after X paid hefty fines of over 28 million reais (around $5 million) and blocked accounts flagged for spreading misinformation about the 2022 Brazilian presidential election.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who had initially blocked the platform, announced the “immediate return” of X’s operations in Brazil after the company agreed to meet legal obligations, including appointing a local representative. Brazil’s telecoms regulator, Anatel, was instructed to restore X’s services for its 20+ million users within 24 hours.
The ban was enforced earlier this year after X failed to adhere to court orders requiring it to curb disinformation. Musk, a vocal advocate for free speech, criticized the decision, branding it an overreach of power. However, as X began complying with the court’s rulings by September, the path to restoring the platform was cleared.
X’s comeback is significant, as Brazil remains one of the platform’s most crucial markets, especially in Latin America. Musk’s platform now seeks to rebuild trust with its Brazilian audience while adhering to stricter content regulations.
