Blackmagic Design is taking a page from rivals RED, Sony and Panasonic with the announcement of their new Blackmagic Pyxis 6K camera. The modular, box-style cinema camera aims to offer professional filmmakers and videographers a highly customizable and future-proof platform to build their ideal camera system.

The Pyxis 6K starts as a compact camera “brain” housing the essential controls, displays, media slots and imaging components. From there, users can accessorize the body by attaching handles, microphones, viewfinders, SSDs and other modules using an array of mounting points and expansion ports.

The basic camera specs read like a wish list for independent filmmakers and studios alike. The 24-megapixel 6K full-frame sensor captures up to 13 stops of dynamic range with dual gain sensor technology supporting ISOs up to a staggering 25,600. Recording 12-bit Blackmagic RAW at up to 6K resolution directly to affordable CFexpress Type B cards or external SSDs via USB-C.

But the Pyxis isn’t just about capturing breathtaking footage. It’s designed to be a comprehensive production suite, with support for direct streaming to platforms like YouTube, Facebook and Twitch built right into the camera. Via wired Ethernet or mobile cellular connections, users can broadcast live content and monitor streaming status and data rates directly from the camera’s viewfinder or LCD.

As a modular system, the Pyxis 6K offers ultimate flexibility in use cases from minimalist run-and-gun shooting to rigged-out studio cams. An optional $1,695 URSA Cine EVF turns it into a proper handheld cinema camera. Three interchangeable lens mounts (Canon EF, Leica L, ARRI PL) allow the use of professional glass from multiple platforms.

While not a bargain basement offering, the $2,995 Pyxis 6K (available in June) represents an aggressively-priced entry into the modular cinema camera market currently dominated by far pricier offerings from RED, ARRI and Sony’s VENICE line.
