After years of anticipation, Netflix has finally released the first full trailer for its highly-awaited live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Set to premiere tomorrow, February 22nd, the trailer offers fans their first real glimpse into the rich fantasy world and characters they’ve come to cherish over the years.
Centered around 12-year-old protagonist Aang, played by up-and-comer Gordon Cormier, the trailer sets up the young airbender’s quest to master control of the four elements and bring peace to the war-torn world. We see Aang transported from his peaceful life among the Air Nomads into a turbulent new era marked by the tyrannical Fire Nation’s conquest over the other nations. The trailer highlights Aang’s playful and adventurous spirit, portraying his initial wonder and eventual graveness in the face of his monumental destiny as the Avatar.
Cormier is joined by a talented ensemble cast breathing life into fan-favorite characters like Katara, Sokka, Zuko and Iroh. The trailer teases the group’s defining traits and relationships, from Katara’s caring nature to Sokka’s wit and Zuko’s internal struggle. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee notably stands out as the wise Uncle Iroh, delivering an impactful line about choosing one’s own destiny that is classic Iroh.
Beyond the characters, the trailer visually brings to life the elemental magic and rich cultures that made the original series so immersive. We get glimpses of the majestic air temples Aang once called home, the icy tundras of the Water Tribe, as well as twisters, tidal waves and fire blasts during action sequences.
While brief, the trailer effectively channels the charm and emotion that made Avatar: The Last Airbender such a phenomenon. With stunning effects and a talented cast, it sets the stage for an adaptation that may finally do justice to the beloved source material after past failed attempts.
