Automattic, the company behind WordPress [.com], Tumblr, Pocket Casts, and various other popular web platforms, has just invested $50 million in the acquisition of Texts, a universal messaging app. Texts, often seen as an ingenious solution, allow users to manage all their messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, iMessage, and more, within a single, unified interface. While similar apps like Beeper exist, Texts also offers additional features like AI-generated responses and message summaries, emphasizing its goal of simplifying your digital communication.
Matt Mullenweg, Automattic’s CEO, believes that the acquisition of Texts signifies not just a product addition but a substantial shift in the company’s focus. Previously, Automattic concentrated on publishing and commerce, but now, messaging has become its third pillar. Mullenweg highlights the significance of these areas in human life and the need for open-source solutions for their long-term sustainability.
In the long run, Mullenweg is optimistic about decentralized and open-source messaging networks like Matrix. He envisions Texts as a gentle catalyst for moving users towards more open protocols, though he emphasizes that users should have the final say in this matter.
Mullenweg also lauds Texts for two essential aspects. Firstly, he praises Texts’ founder, Kishan Bagaria, as a tech prodigy with a promising future. Secondly, he commends Texts’ security model, which relies on on-device encryption rather than cloud storage of messages. This approach aligns with Mullenweg’s ethical stance and may challenge cloud-based messaging apps, providing a strong technical argument for promoting interoperability.
The immediate priority for the Texts team under Automattic is to finalize its mobile app. According to Mullenweg, achieving seamless mobile integration with push notifications, efficient battery usage, and strong end-to-end encryption is a complex task, but they’ve made significant progress while ensuring user privacy.
Currently, Texts is a premium service priced at $15 per month for power users, but Mullenweg hints at a potential limited free version in the future. He envisions Texts as a valuable tool for anyone serious about messaging, offering hours of daily utility at a price that’s competitive with popular streaming services or a couple of cups of coffee.
Mullenweg and Automattic anticipate a bright future for messaging, as online interactions increasingly shift towards private group chats. While monetizing chat remains a challenge, Mullenweg believes that the key to success lies in simplifying and streamlining messaging experiences. With the acquisition of Texts, Automattic takes a bold step towards this future, where messaging is a little less messy and a lot more efficient.
