AT&T might be giving you that “Hey Siri, remind me to change my passwords” feeling right now. Hackers snuck into their system and grabbed a ton of call data on basically everyone with an AT&T phone – that’s like 110 million people!
The good news? They didn’t steal the actual conversations you had or the times you called. But the bad news? They got hold of who you called and texted, and how often, for a whole six-month period between May and October 2022.
Think about it – that Thai place you totally didn’t order takeout from every other week? Yeah, they might know about that now. It might seem like no big deal, but experts are saying this is a pretty serious breach. With a little online digging, anyone could figure out who those numbers belong to, and that could expose some seriously private stuff – business deals, personal relationships, the whole shebang.
AT&T found out about this back in April but kept it hush-hush at the government’s request. They’re working with the authorities to catch the culprits and say the data isn’t out in the wild yet, but this is definitely a wake-up call. In today’s world, where our phones are basically extensions of ourselves, a data breach like this can be a real nightmare. So, maybe take a look at your call history, see if there’s anything you wouldn’t want everyone to know, and definitely beef up those passwords!
