AT&T, a telecommunications company, today reported a huge data breach. The breach resulted in the exposure of personal information belonging to 73 million customer accounts on the dark web. The dark web is a part of the internet that is commonly exploited by cybercriminals. The company confirmed the incident on Saturday, which has left millions of current and former subscribers at risk of identity theft and potential fraud.
A massive data breach occurred about two weeks ago, which exposed a vast amount of sensitive information. The leaked data includes personal details such as names, Social Security numbers, and other information belonging to 7.6 million current AT&T account holders, as well as a staggering 65.4 million former customers. To make matters worse, the data reportedly dates back to as early as 2019, indicating the extent of the potential exposure.
In its statement, AT&T revealed that the source of the data leak is still under investigation, leaving open the possibility that the breach originated from either the company’s systems or those of a third-party vendor. However, the company maintained that, as of Saturday, there was no evidence of unauthorized access to its internal networks, and the incident had not materially impacted its operations.
Nonetheless, in a proactive move to mitigate potential harm, AT&T has reset the account passwords of millions of affected customers. The company has also pledged to offer complimentary credit monitoring services to those impacted, acknowledging the gravity of the situation and the potential risks associated with such a massive data leak.
The breach comes as a major blow to AT&T, the third-largest retail wireless carrier in the United States, trailing behind industry giants Verizon and T-Mobile. The company’s reputation for safeguarding customer data has been called into question, especially in the wake of a widespread network outage in February that prompted an investigation by federal authorities.
