If you were keeping an ear to the ground at CES this year, you might remember catching a whiff—literally—of innovation from ASUS. The company’s Adol 14 Air Fragrance Edition laptop made headlines with its magnetically attached oil diffuser, which released a subtle aroma as the machine warmed up. Now, ASUS is turning heads (and noses) once again by unveiling a companion product: the Fragrance Mouse.

At first glance, the Fragrance Mouse looks like any other compact, wireless peripheral. It sports a familiar layout with two clickable buttons and a scroll wheel, engineered to offer the smooth, reliable performance we’ve come to expect. But the secret lies on its underside. Here, a small compartment houses a refillable vial—a clever little chamber designed for your favorite essential oils. The idea? To let users customize their workspace aroma as easily as they switch between apps. According to ASUS, the vial is removable and washable, ensuring that you can swap out scents whenever the mood strikes.

Beyond its olfactory innovation, the Fragrance Mouse doesn’t skimp on the essentials. It boasts dual-mode connectivity, seamlessly linking via Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz wireless USB dongle. With adjustable DPI settings at 1200, 1600, and 2400, it promises accurate tracking for everyday use—whether you’re navigating spreadsheets or scrolling through your favorite websites. Powering this scented contraption is a single AA battery, with ASUS asserting that it’s built to deliver up to a year’s worth of performance under normal usage conditions.

The left side shows the opened mouse base with product information, barcode, wireless receiver slot, power switch, and DPI button visible. On the right are two separate components: the USB wireless receiver at the top and the battery compartment cover below, both in matching rose clay color. The mouse features the ASUS branding and regulatory information printed on its base.

The Fragrance Mouse is part of a broader, slightly eccentric vision at ASUS—one that blends standard tech functionality with sensory experiences. The Adol 14 Air Fragrance Edition laptop, introduced in China last July, sparked curiosity with its built-in diffuser that released essential oil aromas as the device heated up. Now, by extending this concept to a mouse, ASUS is not only catering to gadget enthusiasts with a taste for the unconventional but also challenging the norms of what computer peripherals can be.

While the full “stinky” (or should we say, “scented”) set might remain a curiosity for those outside China, the mouse itself is positioned for the US market, arriving in distinctive finishes: Iridescent White and Rose Clay. It’s clear that ASUS isn’t just interested in performance metrics—they’re also looking to inject a bit of personality into our daily tech rituals.

Imagine the possibilities: a quick refill of your favorite lavender or citrus blend could transform your desk from a sterile work environment into a personal oasis. There’s also an unmistakable element of fun—an invitation to experiment with scents, perhaps even to pull off the ultimate office prank. ASUS is letting users choose their own essential oils, rather than forcing them into a proprietary scent ecosystem.

The ASUS Fragrance Mouse might seem like a novelty at first, but it underscores a larger trend in consumer technology: the blending of sensory experiences with everyday devices. While its sibling, the Adol 14 Air Fragrance Edition laptop, is still exclusive to the Chinese market, the mouse’s arrival in the US suggests that ASUS is testing the waters for a more multisensory approach to computing. Whether you’re a tech purist or someone who believes that even your mouse should help you “stop and smell the roses,” this product is sure to spark conversation—and maybe even a little mischief—on your desk.

For now, we await further details on pricing and availability. ASUS is not afraid to think outside the (scented) box.
