Asus unveils AirVision M1 smart glasses at CES 2024

While wearability is an open question, if Asus can perfect the smart glasses aesthetic without compromising performance, AirVision M1 may find an audience.

Asus made waves at CES 2024 this week with the unveiling of its AirVision M1 smart glasses, a wearable display targeting creative professionals much like Apple’s Vision Pro headset.

Sporting a 1080p Micro OLED display with a generous 57-degree field of view, the AirVision M1 serves up a sizable virtual screen right before your eyes. The glasses connect to smartphones and laptops via DisplayPort, piping content from those devices directly to the integrated display speakers included in the temples.

The concept will feel familiar to those aware of TCL’s NXTWear smart glasses, which offer a similar wired experience. However, Asus has added some intriguing enhancements to the formula, including an embedded touchpad on the left temple for adjusting the display and settings without reaching for your connected device. There’s also the ability to pin the virtual screen so that it always appears in the same area of your vision field, reducing motion sickness.

Of course, wearability remains an open question for these types of glasses. Asus’ press renderings showcase a bulky, somewhat awkward design that seems unlikely to blend seamlessly into everyday environments. It’s a common challenge for this product category, given the need to pack so much technology into such a small footprint close to your face. And while the AirVision M1 isn’t necessarily meant to be worn at all times, even brief usage cases like viewing content on a flight or during a coffee shop session require an unobtrusive frame.

Dreaming of a bigger screen without compromising on space?

Pricing and availability details remain unannounced as of now. For context, TCL prices its NXTWear models at around $400, so expect the AirVision M1 to land somewhere in that same ballpark.

If Asus can solve some of the aesthetic hurdles of smart glasses while matching performance specs to its Apple-esque branding and price point, it may have a compelling entrant in this emerging category of on-the-go displays for power users. But maintaining wearability without compromising capability continues to be easier said than done.
