At its annual WWDC conference, Apple gave the world a sneak peek at iPadOS 18, the next major iteration of its iPad operating system. The update brings a slew of new features, headlined by the long-awaited addition of a built-in calculator app for iPads. This means iPad users can finally ditch the often ad-infested and poorly optimized third-party calculator apps and perform simple math calculations directly on their devices.

But the calculator isn’t the only star of the show. iPadOS 18 embraces artificial intelligence (AI) in a big way. Siri is getting a major upgrade, incorporating functionality similar to ChatGPT, allowing for more natural and informative interactions.
The update also caters to user preferences with extensive customization options. The home screen can now be tailored to individual needs, with the ability to freely arrange apps and widgets. Control Center gets a makeover as well, offering more control and the ability to integrate functions from third-party apps.
Taking notes on the iPad is about to get a whole lot smoother. The Notes app is getting a new feature called Smart Script, which leverages machine learning to improve the appearance of handwritten notes. It can even mimic your handwriting style, making your digital notes look more natural.
Apple is also bringing some of the most anticipated features from iOS 18 to iPadOS 18. This includes the ability to schedule messages in iMessage, react to messages with any emoji using the Tapback function, and even hide apps for better privacy control.
Collaboration gets a boost too, with a new screen-sharing feature in SharePlay that allows users to remotely control another person’s iPad.
The update extends beyond user-facing features. The Settings and Photos apps have been redesigned for a more intuitive experience, and a new customizable floating tab bar makes navigating within apps easier.
Accessibility is a priority for Apple, and iPadOS 18 reflects that commitment. A new feature allows users with physical limitations to control their iPads using just their eyes.
This news comes on the heels of Apple’s recent iPad hardware refresh, which saw the introduction of the M4-powered iPad Pro and the M2-powered iPad Air. The high-end Pro models boast stunning OLED displays for the first time, while the iPad Air comes in two sizes – 11 and 13 inches. Both the new iPads and a range of older models will be compatible with iPadOS 18 when it launches in the fall. With a built-in calculator, increased customization options, and a significant AI boost, iPadOS 18 promises to be a major upgrade for iPad users, making the iPad an even more versatile and powerful device.
