Apple’s ecosystem is becoming a little more browser-friendly—at least if you’re a macOS user. The company has officially launched an iCloud Passwords extension for Firefox, allowing users to seamlessly access and autofill their passwords stored in iCloud Keychain. This extension also enables users to create new secure passwords in Firefox, syncing them back to Apple’s ecosystem. However, there’s a catch: this feature is exclusive to macOS Sonoma or later, leaving Windows users out in the cold.
If you’re a Windows user, don’t despair entirely. You can still access iCloud passwords via the iCloud for Windows app, but it only works with Chrome or Edge through their respective extensions. Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward compatibility for Firefox on Windows. This restriction stems from Apple’s reliance on a macOS utility that facilitates password extension communication, which isn’t supported on Windows or earlier macOS versions.
Interestingly, the Firefox extension wasn’t always Apple’s creation. It originated from a third-party developer, who recently announced that Apple has taken over its maintenance. The original GitHub repository remains for historical reference, but all development responsibilities now fall under Apple’s umbrella.
While this is a step forward for Apple’s cross-platform usability, the extension’s limited compatibility might frustrate non-macOS users. Whether Apple will expand support to other platforms remains unclear, but for now, only macOS Sonoma users can enjoy Firefox integration in full.
