In an era dominated by advanced in-car technology, it might come as a surprise that many drivers are still tuning in to good old AM/FM radio. New data from Edison Research has shed light on the listening habits of drivers in 2023, and it seems like the traditional radio waves are far from fading away.
Edison Research surveyed individuals aged 13 and older to understand how they spend their time listening in their vehicles. The findings are categorized into two groups: those without Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and those with these advanced car connectivity systems.

For people without Apple CarPlay or Android Auto:
- AM/FM radio takes the lead, occupying a significant 67% of their in-car listening time.
- Streaming services like Apple Music claim 9% of their listening hours.
- SiriusXM follows at 12%.
- Podcasts make up 4%.
- The remaining 8% is divided among other audio sources.
For individuals with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto:
- AM/FM radio remains a dominant force but drops slightly to 46% of their listening time.
- Streaming services see a notable increase, occupying 18%.
- SiriusXM maintains a strong presence at 19%.
- Podcasts account for 7%.
- The remaining 10% is spent on other audio options.
Remarkably, individuals with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto spend about twice as much time streaming music in their cars compared to those without these systems. However, what’s truly astonishing is the enduring popularity of AM/FM radio, with nearly half of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto users still tuning in. It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of this time-tested medium, even in an age of high-tech infotainment systems.
