In a long-awaited move, Apple has finally announced the next iteration of its AirPods Max, and it’s a big one: the headphones are making a switch from the old-school Lightning port to the more universal USB-C.
After nearly four years of the same hardware, this upgrade is a breath of fresh air. Apple has been gradually phasing out the Lightning port, which has been around since 2012, and now, the AirPods Max are among the last of Apple’s devices to embrace this change. While last year saw the AirPods Pro 2 get a USB-C charging case—giving users an easy upgrade without having to replace their earbuds—the AirPods Max users will need to buy a whole new set to make the switch.
The new AirPods Max are up for pre-order starting today and come in five snazzy colors: midnight, starlight, blue, orange, and purple. They’re priced at $549, the same as the previous model, and will start shipping on September 20th.
